Brockstedt Mandalas Federico LLC, with co-counsel Keilty Bonadio, has filed a federal class action complaint against James C. Roberson II, M.D. and MedStar Health, Inc. on behalf of his former patients, following the Maryland State Board of Physicians’ permanent revocation of his medical license for inappropriate sexual contact with patients.
If you were treated by Dr. Roberson at MedStar Health Orthopedics in Brandywine, MD or Lorton, VA, you may be a member of the class.
THE PUBLIC RECORD
What the Maryland Board of Physicians Found
Dr. Roberson held himself out as a MedStar rheumatologist and treated patients at MedStar Health Orthopedics at Brandywine (Brandywine, Maryland) and MedStar Health Orthopedics at Lorton (Lorton, Virginia). The Maryland State Board of Physicians began investigating his conduct in October 2024 after a female patient reported that he had touched her inappropriately during an examination earlier that year. Earlier complaints regarding his examination practices date back to 2018.
On October 1, 2025, the Board summarily suspended his license, finding he posed a substantial likelihood of serious harm to public health and safety. That suspension was affirmed on October 16, 2025, and on February 2, 2026, the Board permanently revoked his Maryland medical license (License No. D0068136). Virginia imposed a corresponding mandatory suspension on October 20, 2025.
The Board’s findings describe inappropriate breast examinations performed without a chaperone, medically inappropriate massages using oil or lotion, medically unnecessary touching and penetration of patients’ vaginas, sexual comments, and other sexually inappropriate conduct involving at least seven identified patients. The Board concluded this conduct constituted immoral and unprofessional conduct in the practice of medicine and sexual misconduct under Md. Health Occ. §§ 14-404 and 1-212 and COMAR 10.32.17.
On behalf of Plaintiff LaShawn Basham and a putative class, our firm and co-counsel have filed a Complaint and Demand for Jury Trial in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland against Dr. Roberson and MedStar Health, Inc. The complaint alleges, among other things, that MedStar negligently hired, supervised, and retained Dr. Roberson and failed to act on warning signs going back years.
These facts are drawn from the public Consent Order of the Maryland State Board of Physicians (Case No. 2225-0100 A) and the publicly filed federal Complaint. Both documents are available below.
