As Maryland lawmakers move to weaken the state’s Child Victims Act, more survivors are coming forward with disturbing new allegations against Calvert Hall College High School, detailing decades of sexual abuse and institutional failure.
The lawsuits were brought by the Calvert Hall Lawyers Working Group — a coalition of Maryland attorneys, including Brockstedt Mandalas Federico (BMF). They allege the school ignored credible reports, protected known abusers, and silenced victims for decades.
“For too long, Calvert Hall prioritized its reputation over the safety of its students,” the group said. “Justice shouldn’t have an expiration date.”
The proposed changes to the CVA would cap compensation and restrict survivors’ rights starting June 1. Lawsuits filed before that deadline will proceed under the current law.
“This is an extremely painful day, because from the moment of my earliest memories of childhood, the only place I was going to school, like everyone else from the last 100 years in my family, the males, was Calvert Hall,” said Christopher “Kit” Bateman, one of at least a dozen survivors. “It was my dream.”
